New Documentary 'Captivated' DVD Addresses Media and Technology and the Growing Need for Discernment

"Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by screens. Have we entered a techno utopia or a virtual prison?" Producer and co-director, Phillip Telfer, asks this and other pertinent questions in the new documentary "Captivated: Finding Freedom in a Media Captive Culture."

Everyone would agree that we live in a media-saturated society, but how many consider the possibility that they have become captives? People of all ages are being held hostage by television, video games, social networks, movies, texting, tweeting, and more. They have become infatuated with the things of the world and distracted from God, from eternity, and from deeper relationships with each other.

This feature-length documentary is not anti-media or anti-technology, but raises concerns about the unchecked enthusiasm regarding media, and highlights the overwhelming evidence of growing problems on multiple fronts. It addresses the potential physical, moral, spiritual, mental, and emotional impact of today's media and technology when consumed or used without discretion.

This film has an outstanding lineup of interviews featuring Ray Comfort, Bob Waliszewski, Dr. Ted Baehr, Dr. Jeff Myers, Kerby Anderson, Kevin Swanson, Dr. David Walsh, Al Menconi, Dr. Dimitri Christakis, Dick Rolfe, Phil Chalmers, Professor Mark Bauerlein, Maggie Jackson, and more.

What really makes this movie extraordinary is the personal stories of everyday people who have found freedom from their former bondage to media and technology. Nick, an auto mechanic, shares about his former addiction to NASCAR and NFL. Corey, a young skateboarder, talks about his experience of going on a media fast. Neysa candidly admits her struggle with Farmville on Facebook, and several other stories bring this down to earth for the average viewer.

This documentary is a production of the non-profit organization Media Talk 101, founded by Phillip Telfer. Phillip wrote, produced, and co-directed the documentary with the help of award winning director, Colin Gunn.

Ridley Scott on Blu-ray Technology

"Technology continues to bring us wondrous advances in filmmaking to improve how we view movies.

While it's exciting to consider the possibilities stemming from this era of innovation -- which directors and futurists for decades have envisioned -- that allows us to watch a movie "anywhere, anytime," the more preoccupied we become with the technologies of how movies can reach us, the less we seem to ask the most important question: How do we really want to experience a film?

In my view, the only way to see a film remains the way the filmmaker intended: inside a large movie theater with great sound and pristine picture. Music and dialogue that doesn't fully reproduce the soundtrack of the original loses an essential element for its appreciation. Simply put, the film loses its power.

Short of that, the technically sophisticated Blu-ray disc, of which I've been a supporter since its inception, is the closest we've come to replicating the best theatrical viewing experience I've ever seen. It allows us to present in a person's living room films in their original form with proper colors, aspect ratio, sound quality, and, perhaps most importantly, startling clarity.

Which is why it has never made sense to me that those preoccupied with how movies are delivered have for years written off "physical media" (i.e., movies on discs) as "dead" even though the evidence shows it isn't happening and won't for years to come. Technology will need to make many more huge leaps before one can ever view films with the level of picture and sound quality many film lovers demand without having to slide a disc into a player, especially with the technical requirements of today's 3D movies.

Granted, the older DVD technology is phasing out. But it is yielding to the Blu-ray just as videocassettes once gave way to the technically superior DVD. This is evolution. Far from being dead, physical media has years of life left and must be preserved because there is no better alternative. Pundits aside, Blu-ray for the foreseeable future remains the finest technology to preserve the impact and enjoyment of watching movies at home.

We've come a long way from those flickering, silent screens which were accompanied only by a person playing a piano. What has remained constant is that people then and now have always sought out the magic one feels after watching a truly memorable film. For movie lovers it doesn't matter whether that magic comes at a theater or through a disc, an electronic stream, a satellite or a wireless device as long as it is delivered through the best possible experience."

Beyond the Mask - Stephen Kendrick

"Director Chad Burns and his wife Angela met with Steven Kendrick (producer of Courageous, Fireproof, and Facing the Giants) last night. We discussed our shared passion to point people to Christ through film. We deeply respect the tremendous work that the Kendricks are doing to impact our culture and are excited to glean from Steven’s expertise. Over coffee in Georgia, Steven offered encouragement and valuable insight into our story’s theme and business plan.

Steven suggested that as we continue to approach investors, we emphasize our ability to create excellent period sets and costumes and to leverage large volunteer networks–core strengths of Burns Family Studios. The talk with Steven reminded us of...."

Forgotten Christmas

Soon we’ll be reminded of the greatest story of all time. If you look hard, you may find the main character, Jesus Christ. He's resting quietly, hidden among the inflatable snow globes, the singing Christmas trees and the jolly mall Santas.

Have we forgotten what Christmas is all about? Have the snowmen, presents and colorful lights obscured the true reason for celebration?

"The Song" Casting Call

Information used from Richard Ramsey's Blog

City on a Hill is excited about production for the Ministry's first feature film. Inspired by the life and works of King Solomon, The Song tells the story of a young, aspiring singer-songwriter whose marriage and life suffer when the song he writes for his wife propels him to stardom.

The script for the feature portion of "The Song" is done. But, several months ago, the story was a series of scattered scribbles on whiteboards and notecards. Here's a glimpse of where were were in February. Looking back, it's interesting to see how the process changes things and which ideas make it in and which ones don't.  And, which ideas couldn't have been anticipated and simply materialize during the actual writing process.

The Trial

I saw this film not to long ago and was quite impressed. Then again, it is rare for me NOT to enjoy a courtroom drama film. This is not an allegorical tale, or an analogy...this is straight up court case story about a down-and-out lawyer looking for answers and desperatly trying to win one last case so he can retire. As he digs deeper there seems to be something he's missing, something that doesn't quite add up about the whole thing. While not an action film, there is a nice twist-ending to the story that adds a bit of spark to the storyline. This is one worth checking into!

SYNOPSIS

After the horrific death of his wife and two sons, suicide seems to be the only escape for small town attorney Mac McClain... until he's assigned a capital punishment case that begins to transform his life and those around him forever.
